Kapitein Nemo

  • From August 7 to 20
    11:00 - 18:00

Captain Nemo’s greatest loves are sea creatures, aquatic plants and endless blue oceans. His passion takes him to the depths of the sea in search of the vampire squid with its strange lights on its tentacles. He works day and night to make his undersea dreams come true. We meet Nemo in his favourite place, where land and water meet. Do you want to join him on a voyage of discovery? Jump aboard the magical tent boat! Feel the wind in your hair and let your thoughts float away on a musical archipelago as you listen to the wondrous sounds of the sea. Captain Nemo is a dream-like listening adventure for seafarers from 6 to 106 years old. It’s about fantasies that endure through storm and calm. On this occasion, Captain Nemo will take place on the beach in Zeebruges, starting on 7 August.

Theme

Captain Nemo harks back to Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, the famous tale by Jules Verne. It imagines Nemo as a little boy who wants to build a huge submarine with lots of windows. From the vivid imagination and boundless curiosity of the young Nemo there issues a stream of questions and ideas that makes listeners reflect on what drives them as individuals, what beliefs they hold and what new or long-held dreams they harbour. Nemo’s boat recalls votive ships, the models that used to be placed on the altars of sailors’ guilds. In Captain Nemo the ship also represents the carrier of dreams, memories and hope. The installation dovetails perfectly with Bruges’ historical links to the sea.

Captain Nemo is based on the picture book of the same name by Winny Ang (text) and Charlotte Severeyns (illustrations). NARWAL and director Michiel Alberts created a total experience that immerses you in the book’s world and stimulates all your senses, including your sense of adventure. The magical tent boat—a striking installation built and erected by Sig Beunen and Sarah Geirnaert from Timecircus—is the star of the show. The poetic, philosophical and slightly absurd texts are read by actor Peter de Graef and embedded in a dream-like soundscape by composer Bart Verheyen.
